Upcoming SCPRA Conference PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 01 July 2010 14:36

October 26, 2010 is just a meer 117 days to our next annual Conference for SCPRA.  I am really looking forward to this years conference for two reasons.  1, that it is back at the beach Cool  2, we have excellent programs planned for you with some excellent speakers presenting.  This year we are not having individual traks that you can choose from but one class for each time slot that everyone will be attending.  Our hopes in doing this will allow you to attend all that is being offered and no one looses out on not being able to attend a class that was being offered at the same time as another you were attending.  The brochures have gone to print and will soon be mailed out to our membership.  Please be on the lookout for the brochure and fill it out and send it in as soon as possible.  Space is limited and we are limiting it to the first 200 registrants.  The cost for the conference this year has been reduced to $100 for members and $125 for non-members.  Something new this year is that all meals are paid for thru your registration except for Thursday nights meal which is the night that everyone usually goes out on their own.  We will also put the brochure out on our WEB page for you to print out and mail in.

Two of our Regions will be voting for new officers or re-electing officers at this years conference.  Those Regions are:  Pee Dee and Upstate.  Each of these two Regions have put on excellent workshops this year.  Coastal and Midstate Regions you have your work cut out for your workshops next year.  Midstate and Coastal Regions have held some good networking luncheons with record attendance.  Because of the workshops and networking luncheons held this year and other events coming up, it will be hard to name the Region of The Year at this years conference.  This is a two year award so the winner of this award will have the distinguished honor of reaping the rewards for two years.

 Andrew Bigony - President, SCPRA

SCDAH Budget Cuts PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 June 2010 15:18

Dear friends:

The SC Department of Archives and History needs your help. Yesterday, Governor Sanford announced his vetoes of the state budget. Among them were three cuts to the SC Department of Archives and History budget, totaling $980,945. (The House and Senate had approved a budget of the $2,445, 764 in state funds plus $200,000 in stimulus funds for the agency for FY 2010-2011.) A link to the Governor’s veto is below. http://www.scgovernor.com/NR/rdonlyres/1F1ECBAF-9D5D-4C9A-9BEF-136EDBC7F128/35706/H4657AppropriationsAct1.pdf

Veto 29: Administration and Planning – Other Operating Expenses $635,445

Veto 30: Old Exchange Building -- $145,500

Veto 104: Stimulus Funds -- $200,000

These cuts will make it impossible for Archives and History to continue to fulfill its mission.

If the services and programs of Archives and History have been helpful to you, would you consider letting your local legislator know today, as well as Representative Dan Cooper, Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, and Representative Chip Limehouse, Chair of the House subcommittee dealing with Archives and History. The legislature will be in session on Tuesday (June 15) to consider the Governor’s vetoes. Our ability to continue to serve you and the citizens of South Carolina depends upon your support.

Pat Sowell Receives 2009 Lindy Smith Distinguished Service Award PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 December 2009 19:13

Pat Sowell has been awarded the 2009 Lindy Smith Distinguished Service Award for the performances of extraordinary service.  His service has contrubuted directly to the success and well-being of SCPRA.

Pat Sowell has been supporting The Annual Conference with audio visual equipment for many years.  It is difficult to estimate how many thousands of dollars this has saved SCPRA from having to pay rental fees.  He usually arrives early with his vehicle loaded with computers, printers, projectors, screens, sound systems, and additional backup equipment.  His technical support has been invaluable in contributing to successful conferences and making us look good in the eyes of the membership.  He has also graciously given his time to participate in the training programs at the annual conference by conducting presentations which always drew favorable comments from the audience.

Pat has worked diligently on the SCPRA Program Committee for several years, especially at the planning sessions where again he has furnished computer and printer equipment, along with technical support.  On many occassions, he has had to take vacation time in order to participate in the planning session were he usually was instrumental in developing the PowerPoint presentations of the Program Committee's recommendation to the Board of Directors.  Pat Sowell has done all these things in an unselfish manner, never complaining, often under intense pressure to meet deadlines.

Pat has been a member of SCPRA since 10/19/1999 and has served as a member of the Board of Directors for two terms, a total of four years.  His tenure on the Board is remembered by his logical ideas, and his serving as webmaster contributed in a large way to the success and growth of our association.

Pat Sowell epitomizes the type of dedicated service that the "Lindy Smith Distinguished Service Award" stands for.
