Here it is the second week into November and I think I am all caught up with emails, phone messages, and tasks requested of me since our October 2013 conference.
Our conference theme this year was on: "Protecting & Managing Records - Yours, Mine and Ours". This conference's subject matter could not have come at a better time what with the recent breach at the SC Department of Revenue. We had our Keynote speaker, Mr. Jimmy Earley, the Director of the South Carolina Division of State Information Technology (DSIT) to provide us with information on how the event happened and what is being done to prevent it from happening again. The next day day we had a number of speakers to follow up. First, with Juliana Harris, Coordinator at the SC Dept. of Consumer Affairs to speak on the "Security Breach from the Consumer Perspective". She provided us with a number of ways in which we as consumers can protect ourselves once our personal files have been compromised. We then had a tag-team presentation on "Social Media and HR Law" presented by Ms. Karen Luchka and Richele Taylor. Their presentation centered on something we don't tend to think about as a record; Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other sites). We use them daily but don't often think of the consequences that they can cause us. We then had one of our own members, Ms. Michelle VanAllen, CRM from Santee Cooper to present a presentation on Electronic Documentation Management. (I had quite a few conference members to ask for her contact info to talk more in depth with her) a sure sign that what was presented was very informative. Thank you, Michelle. We also had 3 great speakers for our Special Interest Groups, Tim Nanney who spoke on a project he completed this year using one of our speakers; Natalie Knight from last year's conference, Bill Ragland who spoke on Campus Security. Thank you, Pam, for loaning us your husband!! And then we had Ms. Juliana Harris to speak again on Identity Theft. A great time was had by all who attended the conference this year and a special thank you to all those who took time out of their valuable schedules to come speak at this year's conference.
I also want to thank the Exhibitors who were in attendance this year. We had eight Exhibitors this year with some of our regulars attending and a few new ones as well. Thank you for your participation, and we hope to see you next year. I encourage all of our members to go out to our Exhibitors’ web sites and speak to them about your needs and use their services.
I would be remiss if I did not thank a special group of people who worked tirelessly in putting together a wonderful conference this year. Thank you to the Program Coordinators from each Region, Board Members, and especially Joe Onessimo for his dedication to SCPRA. We have much work ahead of us as we work on next year's conference.
Thank You, All
